Mazda 626 from A to B

July 28th, 2006

Debuting in 1979, the Mazda 626 had a long life of ups and downs. In 1986, the GT model also known as the “turbo” was released. Mazda 626 1986 troubleshooting for that year proved rather difficult with the new engine design, but was easily cured the next year. For Mazda no fuel usually meant a bad fuel pump relay, but the 1989 626 Mazda fuel pump relay was the most troublesome of the years. But chances are if you are looking at that model today it has most assuredly been replaced.

Mazda 626 repair has always generally been pretty straight forward and simple to diagnose. Mazda 626 is easy to come by in the aftermarket sectors. The Mazda 626 Transmission is almost as sturdy as the engine itself, but the automatic transmission of the early eighties could often stand to receive a little attention to keep them running smooth.

The worst transmission problem to be aware of is when your 1993 Mazda 626 shifts hard, especially if you have a four cylinder which would reference your transmission to Fords problem prone transmissions that were used in these. The best Mazda 626 transmission fix is to swap this transmission out for a later one found in a salvage yard, as this transmission is not worthy of being rebuilt.

The next generation of Mazda in 1993, was besides prone for transmission problems, a rather sporty and feeling vehicle compared to the old. To read the 1993 Mazda 626 specifications, you would not think much of its performance numbers. A 118 hp 2.0 liter four-cylinder and 164 hp 2.5 liter V-6 Mazda 626 engine headlined the line-up, but in comparison to the 626’s of the past these woke things up in the driver’s seat quite a bit. In 1994 Mazda 626 seat is often torn due to the fabric used this year, but the foam is usually in good shape, and can be easily recovered by a professional for a reasonable fee.

The 2000 Mazda 626 lx is about as good as you could get this year, as the rest of the 626 line-up was rather drab in both performance and looks. Of course a Mazda 626 body kit could wake things up in the looks department for these years quite a bit, the list for 2000 Mazda 626 after market parts is not quite as long as it probably should be to get you up and going along with today’s newer vehicles of comparable stature. The 2000 Mazda 626 strut replacement is about the best performance upgrade available. The 2000 626 had very poor handling due to weak suspension tuning, but the strut replacement will get you back up to speck at also a rather reasonable fee.

In general the older Mazda 626 vehicles are reliable vehicles if you pay close attention to the few models I have warned you about. But no matter where you stand, you can find relief in the fact that Mazda parts are not incredibly expensive, and with an overall simple design many armchair mechanics will find it easy to do a lot of repair work on their own.
